Business analysis is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to:

- Identify business needs and recommend viable solutions to meet those needs and support strategic decision making;

- Define benefits and approaches for measuring and realizing value, and analyzing those results.
According to the IIBA (International Institute of Business Analysis) 
- Business Analysis is the practice of enabling change in an organizational context, by defining needs and recommending solutions that deliver value to stakeholders.
- Business Analysis is a disciplined approach for introducing and managing change to organizations, whether they are for-profit businesses, governments, or non-profits.
- The Business Analyst is an agent of change.
